With all the recent buzz about automated cloud backup solutions, not so much is heard about the predecessor to the throne of backup and restore methods - 'ghosting', whereby an image is created of an entire drive partition and restored to a 'blank' PC in the event of a critical hardware or software failure.
Ghosting has a number of advantages over using a cloud backup solution. Firstly, instead of backing up selected files and folders, it clones the entire system drive - registry and all - so that it is possible to completely restore a PC to the state it was in when the backup was made. It will look and feel like the same computer, from the programs installed to the wallpaper.
However, there are disadvantages to this method - backups need to be taken manually and regularly, or the data on them quickly becomes old. Ghosting is a great method of creating a generic terminal install (with all the applications and resources a new employee needs to do a certain job, for instance) and is best used in combination with a cloud backup solution, to ensure backed up data is always current.
You will need an external hard disk drive to run through the steps in this guide.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • 1

Access the related download link for this article and grab the installer file for Acronis True Image 2010. After the download completes, run the executable file to begin the installation process, then follow the on-screen prompts.

  • Launch Acronis True Image 2010 using the shortcut that is added to the desktop during installation.

  • 3

Select the Backup tab (on the left, underneath Home) when the application interface appears.

  • In the Backup Center panel, click Disk and Partition Backup. A list of drives connected to your PC are displayed.

  • 5

Check the boxes for the drives you wish to create backup images of. If you want to backup your Windows installation, ensure you include the system drive (usually the C drive, but this varies from PC to PC setup). As you check and uncheck boxes, note the calculated space to backup at the bottom changes accordingly. Ensure this number is not larger than the available storage space on your external drive device. Click Next to continue.

  • Choose Create New Backup Archive. Connect your external drive device to your computer via USB (if you have not already done so) and click the Browse button next to the Backup Location field. Select a location on your external drive to save the backup image.

  • 7

Select a filename for your backup image. It is highly recommended to include the date in the filename, so that you can easily establish how old the backup is later on. Click OK when you have entered a filename for the backup.

  • Click Next to continue with the backup process. A summary of backup operations is shown. Ensure everything is correct and click Proceed to start the backup process, or Cancel if you wish to begin over again.

  • 9

During the backup process, a progress bar indicates the status of the operation. You can minimize the progress bar by clicking the Hide button.

  • When the backup is complete, Acronis True Image 2010 reports that the process was a success. You now have a complete backup image of your hard drive partition stored on your external hard drive.

Tips & Advice

  • Launch Acronis True Image 2010 and choose the Recovery option. Connect the external hard drive containing the image backup, then select this within the Recovery panel inside Acronis True Image 2010.

Click Next to continue. Acronis True Image 2010 will prompt you to reboot if you selected Restore Disks or Partitions, whereby the image will be restored on the system drive.
